About - Artist's Statement

I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1965, from the studio of Professor Artur Nacht-Samborski, and have been working in painting, drawing and book illustration ever since. Right after graduating, painting alone could not pay the bills, so I turned to illustration – with some success: in 1968 I won first prize in the competition “The Art of the Children’s Book”, which marked the beginning of my career as an illustrator.
I went on to collaborate with many publishers, illustrating works such as Revueltas’ “He Who Lives by Night”, Ionesco’s “The Hermit” and Tolstoy’s “The Living Corpse”, as well as designing covers for the series “Library of Polish and World Classics”. It helped that my husband, Wojtek Freudenreich, had already established himself as a graphic artist – working in poster and book design – and became my demanding teacher, to whom I owe a great deal.
But painting was always my true dream. What captivates me about it is absolute freedom – the freedom to choose what I do and how. And so, gradually, a time of searching began – one that cannot end, because there is always another way, and every day offers a chance to start again.
